Beauty bars have been popping up all over the country, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
We can now get professionals to get us party ready in no time at all! In the name of sound research, I went off and tried them all for myself (that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)
Dermalogica has 3 amazing concept stores (Wembley and the VnA Waterfront in CT and Rosebank in Jozi) where you can get your skin primed to perfection on your lunch break.
I tried the BioSurface Peel, R690 – a quick, non-invasive peel developed to exfoliate dead skin, fight pigmentation and reduce fine lines and wrinkles. There is no down time – there is a 72-hour product regime you’ll need to stick to (they give you samples), but that’s the only commitment.
The stores also offer MicroZone (20 minute mini treatments for specific areas of the face and body. Each treatment is just R280.), Face Mapping as well as a Skin Bar where you can play with every Dermalogica product on the market.
Get hold of them here.
TIP: Take some make-up with you if you want to go out afterwards.
If you’re a regular reader of Rouge you’ll have seen my post on Carlton Hair’s new Blow Dry Bars. If not, read all about them here.
Each of the 5 styles available will set you back just R150, but regular customers can buy packages with better rates.
I opted for the Bouncy Curls look. I was in and out in just 40 minutes.
At the moment, the bars are only situated in Hyde Park and Melrose Arch in Gauteng, and Canal Walk and Cavendish in Cape Town. Call to check availability.
TIP: Don’t attempt to ‘walk in’ on a Saturday morning – the bars are very popular, so go when the salons are quieter if you want to ‘walk in’.
Eye Candy offer threading, lash extensions, and tinting at their bars.
I have been going to them for my brows for ages, and have yet to be disappointed.
Threading your brows is quick – less than 10 minutes. It is a bit painful, and I always look a right mess when I’m done because my skin goes red if you dare to look at it, so thread pulling each hair out by the root sends it right over the edge. But within 30 minutes I’m left with gorgeously groomed brows.
Eye Candy HQ is at 99c Kloof Street in CT, as well as in Woolies at Cavendish and Eastgate.
TIP: Give your skin an hour or so to calm down after threading for the first time – my skin stays red for 30 minutes, but yours could be longer or quicker.
Yemaya Express bars have been around a while, and have expanded into 3 provinces.
I went to Memory at the Cavendish stand and opted a Full Vinylux Mani, R200, in this decadent shade called Black Dahlia.
They offer a full range of nail services; from regular manis and pedis to overlays. They stock Crisnail, MediHeel, essie, Gelsih, OPI and CND products, so you’ll always find your favourite. Prices range from R110 for an express mani to R375 for colour tips with acrylic.
Find the Express Bars at Cape Town International Airport, Capegate, Canal Walk and Cavendish in the Western Cape; in Key West mall in Gauteng and at King Shaka International Airport in KZN. Get more info here.
TIP: Opt for Relish or Vinylux manis and pedis that dry quickly to avoid smudging. (Vinyl dries in 8 minutes – I tested it).
Inglot counters offer amazing makeup lessons at their counters. The lessons are free as long as you purchase R450 worth of makeup.
What makes Inglot stand out from other brands is the fact that you can take all of your own make-up along with you (as in any other brand), and they will teach you how to use and apply it correctly – how incredible? So yes, you’ll purchase some of their products, but you’ll in essence expand your make-up collection far beyond that by learning new ways to create with make up you already own! Brilliant.
You can ask your MUA (makeup artist) to create whatever look you want – I opted for a subtle eye with a super-bright lip. Nicole at the Cavendish stand created this gorgeous look for me in just 45 minutes! Obviously, the more complex the look you ask for, the longer it will take.
You’ll get a personalized face chart that will show you where to apply each product so you can easily replicate the look at home. On the back, they will fill each the names and prices of each product, so you can refer back.
This service is available at all Inglot counters nationwide – just call and check availability in advance.
TIP: Take your MUA an image of the look your want as a reference.
