Happy Sunday! We just got back from yet another glorious beach day.
If you’ve been around these parts for a while, you’ll know I’d never dream of going outdoors, let alone to the beach without sunscreen. But until now, the option for ocean-safe sun protection was pretty limited here in South Africa.
Many sunscreens contain non-biodegradable ingredients that can be assimilated by corals and other marine life, which can have a very harmful impact on marine ecosystems.
Since 2013, Eau Thermale Avène has been working to create more eco-friendly sun protection. This year, they have reformulated some of their sun care favourites to be more in line with their Skin Protect, Ocean Respect project.
This project’s aim is to deliver optimum sun protection with minimal environmental impact.
The brand manages to do this thanks to its strict selection of ingredients. These are more biodegradable and difficult for marine organisms to digest. This is thanks to minimal, yet highly tolerated filters, and absolutely no silicones, water-soluble filters or other controversial filters.
So next time you head to the beach, make sure you use sun protection that is good for you and the oceans. Look for the Skin Protect, Ocean Respect logo on Avène sunscreens if you’re unsure.
