Winter Make-Up Trends

The make-up trends for winter are nothing if not an eclectic mix of paint box hues. While hair was kept simple and grown up (see the trends here), make-up went in the other direction.

Toffee apple red lips, peacock eyes and even blue mascara made it down the runway, so put on your aprons, it’s going to be a bright winter.

I found this round-up of the biggest trends over here on Vogue UK’s site. Nobody does a trend like Vouge, so I’ll let them explain…

To start with, can we just soak up the incredible hue of these lip at Gucci:

VERMILION - The deepest and most delicious of scarlet lips were seen at Gucci, Rochas, Badgley Mischka and Jenny Packham, whilst at Donna Karan, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Derek Lam and Marni burgundy was used on the eyes for an unconventional yet arresting look.
BRIGHT EYES – Azure eyeliner flicks at Anna Sui, blue mascara at Stella McCartney and orange, blue and green shadow at Dries Van Noten, Prabal Gurung and Jason Wu respectively – primary brights on the eyes kept beauty looks fun and playful.  PALE AND INTERESTING – So we know we said flushed cheeks were a trend, but there was also an abundance of super-pale faces completely free of blush or bronzer and paired with nude lips and pared-back eyes. The ethereal look was most apparent at Calvin Klein, Giles and Alexander McQueen, whilst at Lanvin and Marc Jacobs the blush-free faces were paired with dramatic eye looks. WHITE – There were swathes of white on the eyes at Giambattista Valli, Marni and Fendi, whilst at Prada it was used for contouring on the cheeks and temples.

MORNING-AFTER EYES – Smudgy, worn-in black eye make-up created a grungy feel at Louis Vuitton, Jean Paul Gaultier and Roksanda Ilincic, whilst at Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang the heavy liner beneath the lower lashes created a “morning-after” look. PINK CHEEKS – Pretty flushed cheeks gave models at Michael Kors, Mulberry, Dolce & Gabbana, and Temperley London the look of having just come inside from the cold. THE ALTERNATIVE SMOKY EYE – The smoky eye is a winter trend almost every year, but this time around we saw the look in new and interesting colourways. It was green, purple and bronze at Roberto Cavalli, grey at Diane von Furstenberg, golden brown at Burberry and emerald at Jason Wu.
BIG BROWS – Nobody could ignore the bold jewelled brows at Chanel (use the magnifier tool for the full effect), whilst at Chloé they were brushed up and at Vera Wang and Missoni they were darkened and enlarged. Plus, who could forget model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne’s own generous pair? EYELINER FLICKS – Heavy black at Lanvin, disconnected lines at Mary Katrantzou, triangular flicks at Erdem and geisha-style monochrome eyes at Zac Posen – classic flicked eyeliner was given a modern update. RED LIPS – Across the board at the London and New York shows in particular, bold red lipstick was they key component of the beauty looks at Rick Owens, Jonathan Saunders, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Zac Posen and many more. Wear alone or with minimal other make-up for maximum impact.
