While sea, sun and sand are great fun during summer, your hair is not as excited about them as you are.
Crunchy and frizzy are not ideal hair conditions, but are unavoidable if you don’t protect your hair. I chatted to David Gillson, master stylist and a Carlton Hair partner at Carlton Hair Hyde Park and Melrose Arch, about what he thinks we should be doing to, and what we should be treating our hair with this season.
This might sound mad, but we protect our skin with SPF, so why not the same with our hair? The sun’s rays can actually breakdown the proteins in our hair just the same way it does our skin. You know this has happened when it’s so brittle, it breaks when you brush it. David says we should look for products with UV protection. These are sunscreen s for your hair. His favourite is Davines Momo Cream. You scalp will also burn like mad, so it’s always better to wear a hat to protect your head and hair. But if you’re not wearing one, make sure you apply a high SPF to your parting. A peeling scalp will ruin your holiday buzz.
The sun, chemicals and salt also play havoc with colour. They will fade it quicker than you’d imagine, leaving it looking dull and lack-luster. And let’s not even mention the dreaded green hue blonde girls have to deal with. To combat this, always rinse your hair with tap water before swimming to reduce the amount of pool or salt water that penetrates the cuticle. Rinse with tap water immediately afterwards too, to remove any traces of salt or chlorine. After a day at the pool or beach, David suggests using a detox shampoo. These are designed to remove any baddies that aren’t meant to be on your hair. Davines’ Naturaltech Detoxifying Shampoo will work a treat. On days you aren’t in the water, you should still use colour protecting shampoo and conditioner to keep the colour fresh.
As well as damaging the hair shaft, the sun and heat also dries-out the hair. You need to replace lost moisture and retain it to keep your locks healthy and shiny. David suggests a deep conditioning mask every few days, as well as moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Davines Naturaltech Nourishing range deeply hydrates and protects the hair from further moisture loss.
Although the feeling of the wind in your hair is great, it actually damaged the hair too. Keep it tied back in a sleek ponytail or braid. If you are leaving it free, then apply a leave-in conditioner like Davines OI All In One Milk, to minimise knots. This will make it easier to de-tangle at the end of the day. My beloved Tangle Teaser Compact Stylers, R260 each are undoubtedly the best knot-busting brushes to ever have been invented. The bristles are varying sizes, and made out of very flexible rubber, so it won’t rip your hair no matter how knotted it is. And this version comes with a protective cover so you can throw it n your beach bag with damaging the bristles.
