Max Factor Velvet Mattes Lipsticks

Max Factor Velvet Mattes Lipsticks (R155.95 each)

What they say: The Velvet Mattes Lipstick Collection has been specifically formulated to give a densely mattified finish, but with a creamy, moisturizing texture.
Traditionally, matte lipstick formulass contain an increased quantity of large particle powders to create an uneven surface that diffuses light reflection for that vital matte finish. Unfortunately, these powders are added at the expense of moisturizing oils. With the Velvet Mattes Lipstick Collection, the formula has been designed differently to traditional matte lipsticks, with no increase in powders or solids. It uses the same moisturizing formula used in Max Factor’s popular Colour Elixir range, however reflective particles – finely milled natural mica with an irregular structure – has been added, resulting in the diffused reflection needed for a matte effect.

What I say: I’ve said before how much I love the look of matte lipstick, but loathe the dry, chalky lips I’m left with afterwards. This new range from Max Factor is the perfect compromise. The formula is matte, but not super, super matte, but I’m happy with that as it’s so comfortable and nourishing on the lips that it feels like you’re wearing a lip balm.

Max Factor very kindly sent me 4 of the 7 shades to try, and all of them suit my skin tone perfectly, although I don’t love the Sunkiss shade. It just isn’t my thing, and I found this shade to have the worst longevity out of the 4.

But the other 3 are just amazing. As I’ve said, the formula is comfortable, but it’s also incredibly pigmented considering the finish. I found all 3 shades stayed put until I ate, and once they did wear down, it was evenly, so I wasn’t left with the treaded 90s R&B star lip line. It was simple to reapply, too. I just added another layer over the top, and it looked perfect – even and smooth. When I removed it in the evening, my lips were soft and felt better than when I applied it – which never happens with matte formulas.

If you love your lipstick to have a velvet finish and decent longevity, you need to have a look at these. You’ll find them at selected Clicks stores for R155.95 each.
