Review | New from Skinny Tan

It was October last year when I wrote about the new look Skinny Tan packaging. I explained that I’d never been a self-tan sort of girl, but their products had converted me somewhat. Well, they’ve gone a step further with their new launches…

I’ve been testing 4 new products from the brand over the past few months, and I love them all! I never thought I’d ever have self-tan on for 3 months straight, but here we are. I even use different formulas depending on the finish I want. I know, check me!

There are a total of 13 products and 2 mitts in the range. All the tanning product formulas are vegan-friendly and cruelty-free, and the natural-origin actives are nourishing and hydrating for the skin.

I mentioned the Skinny Tan Coconut Water Tanning Mist (R399.95) in my 2019 Favourites post, and if pushed, I’d have to say this is my favourite. There is no guide-colour, so you have to be methodical in your application, but there is no colour to stain sheets or clothing. I apply it at night and showering the next morning to reveal a medium glow that lasts over a week. You can apply two or three layers over each other if you prefer a deeper tan, but for that I use the next product.

The Skinny Tan Moisture Mousse (R449.95) is incredible! It’s a dark mousse that allows you to control the level of tan you want. Simply apply with a mitt (I’m still loving my Skinny Tan Dual Tanning Mitt (R129.95)), and leave for 3 hours for a natural-looking tan, 6 hours for a deeper tan or leave overnight (or for 8 hours) for the deepest of deep tans. I’ve only been brave enough to go to 6 hours, and it made my legs darker than they have ever been, but without looking orange or like I’d been rolling in soy sauce.

If you are one of those people who still love to be in the sun, but are aware of the dangers, do yourself a favour and try the Skinny Tan Protect and Glow (R249.99 – R449.95). It offers broad-spectrum sun protection (in SPF30 and SPF50 variants), as well as daily gradual tanning. Apply to your face and body as you would regular sun protection products, wait for your tan to develop while your skin is protected. Genius!

I haven’t used this one as often as the other products, as I don’t need gradual tanning over the top of the darker tans. But I will reach for this in winter when I want a hint of colour on my skin.

If instant colour is more what you’re looking for, the Skinny Tan Wonder Serum (R499.95) is well named. This silky serum dries in just 2 minutes, so no waiting around for it to dry. It delivers an instant hit of colour, but develops over 6-8 hours into a medium, natural tan. The formula contains Vitamin E and Aloe Vera to nourish and hydrate the skin, leaving it soft and supple.

If you’re tan-adverse, but would like not to be, please give ones of these a try. If it can convert me to tanning once a week, it can do the same for you.
