Andy Warhol once said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.”
This rings true for both individuals and brands, and one of my most loved has just undergone a modern revamp in order to stay relevant and hold onto their stamp on the market.
There are few brands more quintessentially British than Crabtree & Evelyn (even though it was founded by an American – I know, still blows my mind!) and when I heard about the new look, I was concerned it would loose some of its heritage. But I am here to report that, in a way, it is even more British than before. Think more Paul Smith, Cath Kidston and craft gin rather than Prince Charles*, Churchill and warm ale.
*I love Charles, but I mean the nearly 70 tweed clad aristocratic type much favoured by old England.
The brand has essentially been split into two ranges; the skincare side is now called Everyday Nature’s Care, and the home scent side, Modern British Home. I’m going to touch on each scent here, but will leave reviews for separate posts, as there is just so much to cover.
The skincare range is strongly inspired by the brand’s motto of ‘explore everything, keep the best’, and the results is 6 gorgeous scent ways that are all formulated without mineral oil, phthalates, parabens or propylene glycol. Each is also meant to create a particular feeling, depending on your energy levels.
My favourite, is the new calming Lavender and Espresso. The range features an unusual blend of lavender, cypress, citron, patchouli, sandalwood and coffee oil. It might not be for everyone, but I love this modern take on lavender.
The new hydrating Rosewater and Pink Peppercorn range sees rose petals blended with pink peppercorn, bergamot, tonka bean and Akigalawood (derived from patchouli.) Vitamin E is added to keep those moisture levels high.
To energize your senses, you won’t go wrong with the Citron and Coriander collection. Lemon, honey and coriander extracts sound good enough to eat, and the scent is as energizing as a superfruit smoothie.
If your skin is in need of a powerful antioxidant boost, try the Pomegranate and Argan Oil collection. Pomegranate and argan oil has been combined with pistachio, ginger and grape seed oils to nourish and protect the skin.
Boost any mood with the invigorating Pear and Pink Magnolia range. These two ingredients are joined by green ivy, teakwood and frangipani to deliver a sweet, yet subtle uplifting scent.
And if a soothing, calming formula is what your skin is after, then treat it to Goatmilk and Oat. These two ingredients are some of the most soothing you can use on irritated, dry skin. Vitamin E has been added to up the nourishment, and the scent is a gentle whiff of rose, geranium, bergamot and lavender.
Now onto Modern British Home. I want to start by saying that Crabtree & Evelyn candles are my favourites. They last for ages, burn so evenly and smell heavenly. My all-time favourite was the India Hicks Island Night one that was sadly discontinued years ago. My sister still has the container, as it’s just too pretty to get rid of (evidence above).
This collection, too, has been clever divided into scent families, but this time by area. Each scent has been designed to compliment each area of your home, to create a comforting cocoon. Each scent comes in 200g Candle (R800 each) or 200ml Diffuser (R1500 each).
