Last week I went to Life Day Spa in Cape Town to try the Thalgo Seaweed Detox Body Wrap.
The treatment started, as with all body treatments, with a short consultation with my therapist. This is very important, as detox wraps especially are not suitable for diabetics or pregnant women. The room was warmer than usual, as was the electric blanket on the bed. This is so that the mud can penetrate the skin better.
The first step of the treatment is a body exfoliation or a dry body brush. I opted for a dry body brush, as I didn’t feel like showering twice during my treatment. Dry skin brushing is done with a body brush using long, firm strokes along the body in the direction of the heart. This boosts circulation, and wakes-up your lymphatic system.
The body scrub option will also boost your circulation, and exfoliate your skin. You then shower, and climb back onto the bed, and continue the same way as the dry body brushing option.
Once suitably brushed, a plasma gel was applied to the areas that would be covered in the mud. The gel helps prepare your skin to better absorb the mud, increasing its effectiveness. It felt a little cold, but not uncomfortable.
Next was the mud application. It’s quite a thick mud, which contains marine algae (which you can smell) as well as minerals to soften and smooth the skin. Marine algae is known for its detoxifying properties, and is very effective in alleviating water retention.
When my legs, torso and tops of my arms were covered in mud, I was wrapped like a sausage in plastic, covered in a blanket, and left to let the mud do its work. My therapist then gave me a scalp massage while I inhaled essential oils to increase my relaxation.
After I had ‘cooked’ enough, I wiggled over to the shower to rinse off all the mud. I was quite surprised at how much I had sweated in a short time. This was a good thing because it meant that my body was releasing toxins. This treatment is always done in a room with its own shower, so you’ll never have to waddle down the passage looking like swamp thing.
Mud free, I got back onto the bed to have my whole body covered in a rich body cream.
Some people experience tiredness after the treatment because of its detoxifying effects. I didn’t feel tired at all, but I did make sure I drank a lot of water throughout the day to help the detox along.
It’s now 5 days later, and my skin still feels soft and supple. I do also feel like I’m less bloated and feel much ‘lighter’.
The treatment takes 1 hour, and costs R430.
