Total Wipe Out

Wipes – what would we do without them?

I always use them as part of my skin cleansing routine – as pre cleansers to remove the majority of the dirt and make up from the day before cleansing with my cream cleanser.

But I know many of you only use wipes to clean your faces – not ideal, girls, but I know you’re probably not going to change. So if you are going to use them to clean your faces, I decided to give you a break down of the best on the market.

I tested every brand and variety I could get my hands on, and put them to the test. The test involved a full face of make-up (including waterproof mascara and eyeliner). These are the one that came out on top of each category. I out-sourced the oily skin test to a friend of mine with suitable skin.

Johnson's Daily

Best for removing make-up: Johnson’s Daily Essentials Fragrance Free Facial Cleansing Wipes for All Skin Types, R47.95 for 25 wipes. There’s a reason Johnson’s wipes are the number one selling brand in SA. These wipes removed every last scrap of make-up in the least amount of time. Top of the pops!

Nivea

Best for dry skin: Nivea Daily Essentials Gentle Facial Cleaning Wipes for Dry and Sensitive Skin, R49.99 for 25 wipes. These did a decent job of removing make up, but most impressive was the hydration they gave my dry skin. They didn’t leave a sticky residue, either like other wipes I tried for dry skin.

Johnson's Hydration

Best for problem skin: Johnson’s Hydration Essentials Cleansing Wipes for Normal to Combination Skin, R47.95 for 25 wipes. These are the new kids in the Johnson’s stable. Developed with ocean minerals to help provide hydration without oiliness to problematic skin. I must note that these removed waterproof make up just as well as the other Johnson’s wipes.

Simple

Best for sensitive skin: Simple Kind to Skin Cleansing Wipes, R39.95 for 25 wipes. Simple market themselves as the ‘sensitive skin experts’, and these wipes are testament to this. The wipes don’t contain any artificial perfumes, alcohol, colourants or harsh chemicals. If your skin is irritated by other wipes, gives these a try.

Clicks

Best packaging: Clicks Skin Essentials Facial Wipes for All Skin Types, R59.95 for 60 wipes. All wipes should come with these plastic lids. I tested these for two months; opening and closing the lid a few times a day, and the wipes left in the pack and still moist and fresh.

DisChem

Best value for money: Dis-Chem Facial Make-up Removing Wipes, R19.95 for 25 wipes. Wipes are not exactly cheap, but everyone can afford these packs from Dis-Chem. Under 20 bucks for 25 wipes; you can’t go wrong!

These last two are not for cleansing your face, but are winners in my book, anyway.

Cherubs

Best for your handbag: Cherubs Eco-care Wipes, R8.99 for 10 wipes. Alcohol free and aloe scented, these are a must have addition to any handbag.

Caribbean Tan

Best for tanning: Caribbean Tan Self Tan Tanning Wipes, R54.95 for 6 wipes. This formula is suitable for all skin shades and the wipes are perfect for touch-up and missed areas from self tanning. They can be used on the face and are individually wrapped – perfect for travelling.

What are your favourite wipes and why?
